But in the ten years which have passed since the initial design of Anastasia, much has changed: in standards in software, hardware and network technologies but most of all, in the reshaping of the discipline of scholarly editing through the impact of digital methods. In terms of its avowed aims, Anastasia was successful: we were able to make several editions we could not have made otherwise. The Anastasia publishing system was developed from 1998 on to enable creation of complex scholarly editions in digital form, with the specific brief of supplying the deficiencies in the only system available up to that time, DynaText.
